Kitano Tenmangu

About the facility

Kitano Tenmangu is the origin and the head shrine of some 12,000 Tenmangu shrines across Japan dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, a historical figure, scholar, and politician who represented the middle Heian Period. Since ancient times, people have called the shrine adoringly by its nickname Kitano-no-Tenjinsama, which is a place to make wishes for passing school entrance exams, getting good academic records, developing great artistic talent, or staying out of trouble.
