About the facility
Okunoin is a sacred site and the center of Koyasan faith, which enshrines the
mausoleum of
monk Kobo Daishi. Today, the site is still a place of prayer for world peace and people's
happiness. The
long approach that stretches about 2 km from the Ichinohashi Bridge to the mausoleum
("Gobyo") is lined
with over 200,000 tombstones and cedar trees that are over 400 years old.
Every day at
6:00 and 10:30
in the morning, there is a ritual of monks offering food to Kobo Daishi, known as
"Shojingu."
