About the facility
The shrine halls were established in their current location in 768, during the
early Heian
Period, and organized to today's level. The bright vermillion halls have been known since
ancient times to
be a beautiful spot for wisteria. Kasugataisha Kokuhoden, the shrine's treasure house, has a
collection of
approximately 3,000 artefacts on display, including 352 national treasures and 971 important
cultural
properties. Thanks to support from the imperial household and the public, countless lanterns
have been
donated to the shrine. In December 1998, the shrine was designated a World Heritage site as
a Historic
Monument of Ancient Nara.
