Wakayama Castle

About the facility

Wakayama Castle was first constructed in 1585 by warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi who ruled the Kishu region and asked his younger brother Hidenaga to build the castle. From 1619, Tokugawa Yorinobu, the 10th son of the first shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu ruled the castle, making it the central castle of the Kishu area, which was then worth 555,000 "goku" (one goku=180.39 liters of rice), with the family starting a long history as one of the three houses of Tokugawa alongside the Mito and Owari families.
Its tower was lost in 1945 during WWII in an air raid and was rebuilt in 1958 with reinforced concrete. From atop the tower, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of Wakayama City.
