Shigisan

About the facility

Shigisan is a temple built in 587 by Crown Prince Shotoku. It is said to have hailed from the story that the prince saw Bishamonten (Vaisravana) appearing at the time, day, and year of the Tiger, and decided to dedicate the temple to the deity. Throughout its grounds, visitors will see paper tigers, which are the deity and symbol of the temple. The temple is still the locals' place of worship for Bishamonten, a deity that is said to bring happiness and good luck. Located on the flank of the 437-meter-high Mt. Shigi, the temple's main hall has an open view of the magnificent Nara Basin.
