Koyasan Konpon Daito Tower
高野山 根本大塔
MAP/E-5
The 48.5-meter tall Buddhist tower stands on a precinct in Kongobuji Temple. It was built after Kukai established the temple in Mt. Koyasan as the symbol of the grass root principles of the Shingon sect of esoteric Buddhism. The interior houses the principle image of Taizo Vairocana Buddha and the statues of Kongokai in each of the four corners of the room. The surrounding pillars are depicted with 16 bodhisattvas, and they represent the mandala in a three-dimensional fashion.
