Ishibutai Tumulus
石舞台古墳
MAP/E-5
Ishibutai Tumulus (late sixth century - early seventh century), which is believed to be the tomb of Sogano Umako, is Japan's largest tumulus, and the 30 boulders together weigh about 2,300 tons. The rocks used to form the ceiling weight about 77 tons, and they give a glimpse into the advanced engineering and hauling skills of the time. Legend has it that on a moonlit night, a fox transformed itself into a beautiful woman and danced on the rocks. Its scale is overwhelming, viewed from the outside and inside, too.
